Classroom Group Maker

Paste a class list, choose how many groups you need, and rebuild when you are ready. Every participating student appears once. Printing and changing the design keep the same groups.

Your entries stay in this browser. Nothing is saved until you choose Save on this device. No student accounts, uploads, or connection to old tool data.
Version 1.0.0 · Create balanced groups, make swaps, and keep the same members when printing.

2 · Check the result

Editable sample content. Change any student or group name. Review the sample content before using these groups for your class.

More page downloads

PNG pages use 300 pixels per inch. Multiple downloads may require browser permission. PDFs contain high-resolution page images; text is not selectable.

Print at 100% / Actual size, with browser headers and footers off. Check one sheet before printing a whole class. Non-Latin text uses your device’s fallback fonts; inspect the preview. PDF and PNG keep the appearance shown on this device.

Balanced groups, with room for teacher judgment

  1. Enter your own list. In the record list, uncheck anyone who is absent today. Duplicate names are labeled with a short record number.
  2. Choose group count or a maximum group size, then select Rebuild groups. Seven students in three groups produces groups of three, two, and two.
  3. Check the members. Swap two students if needed, then print, copy plain text, or deliberately display the names.

Printing and privacy questions

Can I use Letter or A4?

Yes. Choose your paper before printing. The preview and all downloads use the same page plan. Use Actual size rather than Fit to page for measured pieces.

Are entries uploaded or shared with the old tools?

No. This tool uses a separate, optional local library. It does not read, migrate, change, or delete old projects. Opening a website can still involve ordinary website requests; local processing does not make browsing anonymous.

Does this balance skills or guarantee fairness?

No. It randomly assigns students while balancing group size only. It does not infer gender, grades, ability, or relationships. Teacher adjustments are marked and can be undone.

Will printing or switching designs change the groups?

No. The current membership is a snapshot. Use Rebuild groups to create a new assignment. A saved or exported project includes the result so you can reopen it without re-randomizing.

Import a student roster for classroom groups

Start with the students, then let the tool make balanced groups. Download the group roster CSV template with 12 fictional students. This template needs just one column; you do not need to assign group numbers in the file.

What goes in the roster?

The first row is displayName. Put one student’s name on each row below it. Replace or remove every sample name you do not want to use. Students with the same name stay separate and receive a short record number in the group display. This file supplies names only; set attendance and group size in the tool after importing.

From a file to balanced groups

  1. Open the template in Excel, Google Sheets, or another spreadsheet editor. Keep the header row and edit the student names.
  2. Save or download as CSV UTF-8 (comma-delimited), ending in .csv. Convert .xlsx files to CSV first. PDF, Word, and image rosters are not supported.
  3. Choose Import CSV. In Review before replacing, match Full name to the column containing the student names. Leave Preferred name, Class, and Number set to Do not use; they are not needed for grouping.
  4. Review the record count and first five names. Choose Apply previewed import to replace the current roster, or Cancel import to leave it unchanged.
  5. Uncheck students who are absent under Participating today. Choose the number of groups or maximum students per group, then select Rebuild groups. Twelve participating students in three groups produces four students per group.
  6. Review the members and swap two students if needed. Print, download, copy the group text, or use the display option. Styling or printing an existing result does not reshuffle students.

Common questions about imported rosters

Use up to 100 students and a file no larger than 10 MB. Names may contain up to 240 characters; shorter names are easier to read on printed group cards. A missing name or malformed CSV stops the import so you can fix the file. Keep accented names in UTF-8. Do not add grades, contact details, or other private information that this tool does not need.

A roster CSV does not restore a previous group assignment. Choose Export project to keep the current roster, attendance, group membership, manual swaps, and output settings. Use Import project JSON in this group tool to reopen a compatible backup without randomizing it again. A project from the name tag or artwork tool will not open here. Importing does not save automatically; use Save on this device for an optional browser copy. File contents are processed locally, not uploaded.
