How to calculate running pace

Running pace is total time divided by distance. A 25-minute 5K is 5:00 per kilometer, or about 8:03 per mile. RunSplit does the unit conversion and rounds the displayed pace to the nearest second.

Pace per mile vs. pace per kilometer

U.S. runners commonly track minutes per mile. International races and many training plans use minutes per kilometer. Switch units above and the same pace is converted automatically.

Running pace questions

What is a good running pace?

A good pace depends on your experience, distance, goal, age, conditions, and current fitness. A sustainable pace for one runner may be too fast or too slow for another. RunSplit handles the math; it does not prescribe training.

How do I calculate my running pace?

Divide your total running time by the distance covered. For example, 50 minutes divided by 10 kilometers is 5:00 per kilometer.

How fast is an 8-minute mile?

An 8:00 mile pace is 7.5 mph, about 12.1 km/h, or approximately 4:58 per kilometer.

What pace do I need for a 25-minute 5K?

You need to average about 8:03 per mile or exactly 5:00 per kilometer.

What pace is a 2-hour half marathon?

You need to average about 9:09 per mile or 5:41 per kilometer.

What pace is a 4-hour marathon?

You need to average about 9:09 per mile or 5:41 per kilometer.

How do I convert mile pace to kilometer pace?

Divide seconds per mile by 1.609344 to get seconds per kilometer. The unit switch in RunSplit does this automatically.

How accurate is a race pace calculator?

The arithmetic is precise, but the equivalent finish times assume you can hold the same average pace for the entire distance. Weather, terrain, fatigue, stops, and training affect real results.
