How to use Silhouette Maker
- Start with contrast. A side profile, a tree against the sky, or a product on a plain background is a useful starting point. Detailed backgrounds may become part of the silhouette.
- Shape the result. Threshold decides which tones become foreground. Invert selects light areas instead of dark ones. Detail and Noise reduction smooth the source before selection; the cleanup checkboxes remove tiny islands or close small enclosed gaps.
- Choose the finish. Solid creates filled shapes. Soft Edge feathers the boundary. High Contrast starts with stronger tonal separation. Outline Art draws the selected shape’s perimeter instead of filling it.
- Download or print. Choose PNG to keep a transparent background. JPG and printing place transparency on white. Paper options do not resize your image download.
Printing tips
Choose US Letter or A4 and use the same paper in your printer dialog. Print at Actual size / 100%, with browser headers and footers turned off. Make a test print before printing a batch. A small source image cannot gain detail by being enlarged.

Frequently asked questions
Does this remove a photo background with AI?
No. It separates tones with a threshold. It cannot recognize a person or reconstruct missing edges. Use Freehand Image Cutout for manual tracing.
Why is part of my subject missing?
The subject and background may share similar brightness. Adjust Threshold and compare with the original. A different photo may work better.
Can I change the silhouette color?
Yes. Choose a foreground color and a white, black, custom, or transparent background.
Is the PNG really transparent?
Yes, when Transparent is selected. The checkerboard belongs to the preview only and is not included in the downloaded PNG.
Can I undo changes?
Undo and Redo keep the last 30 settings changes for this photo. Reset this style restores the current style’s defaults. Replacing a photo starts a new history.
